DESCRIPTION

Sodium Valproate Syrup is an oral antiepileptic medication that contains the active ingredient Sodium Valproate. It works by increasing the levels of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter in the brain that helps calm nerve activity. This action stabilizes electrical activity in the brain and prevents seizures. The syrup form allows for accurate dosing in children and individuals who have difficulty swallowing tablets.

Indications

• Epilepsy – including all types of seizures such as generalized, partial, absence, and myoclonic seizures.
• Generalized Tonic-Clonic Seizures – also known as grand mal seizures.
• Absence Seizures – brief lapses in awareness, often seen in childhood epilepsy.
• Myoclonic and Atonic Seizures – sudden jerks or drops in muscle tone.
• Bipolar Disorder – as a mood stabilizer to manage acute manic episodes (off-label or as per regional approvals).
• Migraine Prophylaxis – in select patients, particularly when standard treatments are not suitable.

It is widely used in both children and adults due to its broad spectrum of activity against different seizure types.

Interactions

Consult your doctor or pharmacist before using Sodium Valproate Oral Solution if you are taking other medications such as: Antiepileptics (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine), Antidepressants, Antipsychotics, Antifungals (e.g., ketoconazole), Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), and Other CNS depressants.
